About The Property

Plymouth was chosen as a naval town in the 18th century and The Imperial was built by renowned architect to accommodate an Admiral and his family. In the early 19th century it became a surgery for a doctor and his family. Surviving the Blitz The Imperial was converted into a hotel; nowadays a large B&B.

Our staff are chosen for their excellent customer care and attention to detail. It may be Connor, (Duty Manager) who welcomes you on arrival. He also keeps the kitchen as clean as his new car; spotless. Anne is an artist who works part-time at The Imperial, where you will see her paintings on display. Property Maintenance & General Manager, Mike, can be seen with tool bag in hand feeding the occasional sausage to Charlie our Cairn Terrier. Some of our housekeepers are full-time mothers who keep The Imperial fully stocked and exceptionally clean - they will also serve you breakfast in the dining room. Owner, Louise, has a Masters Degree in Hospitality and brother, Richard, brings Finance skills to the table. Between us we work hard to ensure that you will enjoy your stay.

The Local Area

The Local Area

On arrival park the car and explore on foot. We are ideally situated 3 minutes walk from the sea and the shops and 8 minutes to the old town of The Barbican. Activities we love to do are simple: walk on the seafront, purchase an ice-cream or two, contemplate a swim in Plymouth Lido or climb Smeaton's lighthouse. After that the Barbican offers history and in 2020 we celebrate 400 years since the Pilgrim Fathers set sail to discover America. The Plymouth Gin Distillery, National Marine Aquarium and numerous bars/restaurants offer wet weather entertainment as does the indoor Drake shopping centre. It won't take you long to discover that we love Sir Francis Drake - even the island in the Sound is named after him. Numerous boat trips are on offer from the Barbican and you should take one to the Royal William Yard which is breathtakingly beautiful; you may have seen it on the Antique Road Show when they filmed there recently. Certainly two nights are required to make the most of our surprising multi-faceted city. Although we have been here for many years and never get bored of Plymouth and its surrounding area of Dartmoor, Cornwall and the South Hams.
